Cornwall
Mevagissey
This visit to Cornwall was over the Spring Bank Holiday in 2006. We stayed at the Headlands Hotel in Mevagissey perched on top of the hill overlooking the village and harbour and proceeded to get fit by walking up and down the hill at least twice a day. During the long weekend we visited the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan as well as a trek along the Coastal Path to Goran Haven. Getting about would probably be easier by car but there's more sense of adventure trying to decifer the bus timetables or even working out which direction the bus will go.
Eden Project
This is Cornwall's biggest 'pay-for' attraction and is well worth a visit. May is a little early for the gardens but the indoor facilities look as if they'd have plenty to interest all year round. The weather wasn't very good the day we went, cool, overcast and quite windy, and the busiest place was the restaurant. Judging by the vast acreage of empty car parks it looks like this could get pretty crowded in Summer - so if you're visiting then - take a picnic.
Lost Gardens of Heligan
If you love Rhododendrons then visit the 'Lost Gardens' in Spring and be prepared to be amazed. The gardens had been left unattended for several decades and the 'shrubs' have developed into trees with a tangled canopy thirty feet overhead. As well as the woodland walks and formal gardens there's a vegetable garden, farm and the partially reclaimed Jungle area.
Well worth a visit.
